New teashop for Snowdon!

An £8.3 million visitor centre, is to be formally opened today (12 June 2009) on the top of Mount Snowdon, Wales's highest mountain. Although Hafod Eryri, comprising a rail terminus, cafe and visitor centre, opened its doors to the public in May, the official opening will be carried out by the Rt. Hon. Rhodri Morgan who will unveil a special mountain stone set into the rear terrace of the new building. Eryri in English is Snowdonia but there is no translation for Hafod, an old Welsh term for residence on high land. Check out the Snowdon Summit Blog for more information.

Hitting the high notes on Snowdon

Forget concert halls and theatres: three cellists have scaled new heights to perform their music.

This is a wonderful news story about a trio of cellists who climbed Snowdon, carrying their heavy instruments on their backs and then played together at the top. It was the latest mountain in their challenge to play at the top of the highest peaks in the UK and Ireland. The self-styled "extreme cellists" have so far raised over £3,000 from their mountain music challenge, which will be donated to a spinal injury charity and mountain rescue organisations.

In praise of ... Snowdon

There's an op-ed piece in today's Guardian in praise of ... Snowdon, of interest to those of us who have toiled to the top. It was interesting to learn that the cafe at the top is having a much-needed makeover. The pic on the right was taken during the Infusion weekend away in Wales in summer 2004.
